He didn't even swap the headlights over... How Bulgarians manage to get away with their registrations I'll never know

I see many Bulgarian registered UK-spec cars with their original headlights. It looks like the inspection doesn't require you to change the lights...

It's weird because they're blinding the other drivers. I buy cars from the UK and transport them to Estonia where I re-register them and use them for my self or resale. Every single time I do this, I have to demonstrate the headlights have been swapped for LHD traffic and the rear fog light must be on the left side of the car. You simply cannot register it if the headlights are RHD.

Fairly sure this is EU standard and it's just Bulgaria following their own system and not caring.

Reading online about this, I find that it is mixed. Some KAT (Our DMV equivalent) don't even check the lights, some do and requite you to have LHD lights, some might let you drive with the stickers. It's just a broken and corrupted system, as most things here... :pardon:

I've also heard of Bulgarians and Romanians registering cars and getting plates for UK cars without them ever leaving the UK, so I suppose anything is possible down there

I haven't heard about anything like that. Seems a bit too bizzare to be real for me.

They can't and they can possibly get their car seized, because the UK road law is pretty clear about the point that whoever is a UK resident must absolutely have his car registered in UK, otherwise is untraceable and subject to tax fraud. The only reason why they do this is to spare money on insurance and road tax, there's no point in exporting a crappy old Almera.

There are also many LHD UK registered to no one cars in Bulgaria, to even avoid insurance and tax.

Well a lot of them are seasonal workers who don't stay in the UK more than 6 months per year, which makes it perfectly legal to drive Bulgarian registered vehicles, and makes sense to register the cars in Bulgaria giving the UK's exorbitant insurance rates.
Also, you'd be surprised by the kind of cars Bulgarians bring home here. Just have a look at the photos with the #RHD tag, or my UK plate spots. It really is just anything that's a bargain, many drivers here don't care about the RHD configuration.
