Yes, likes depend 90% on the popularity (following) of the uploaders and 10% on the cars/quality/time invested in the photos.

I think most views happen like this: person a visits the profiles of the people he follows or, then awards likes to all that persons latest uploads.

If a photo is not among the 10 latest uploaded for a given country, it will not be in the top gallery showcase strip OR in the "last 10" list, so the only chance of that photo getting a like is if somebody either visits the uploader's profile (as described above) OR somebody checks several pages of photos uploaded from the country in question... and Denmark is generally not considered an "interesting country" by the majority, so very few will be binge-watching all the latest DK uploads.

Now add to this, that some people upload huge quantities of photos in rapid succession - like 10 DK plates in 5 minutes - probably not out of bad intention, but the result is, that all other photos instantly get pushed out of the top gallery strip, the "last" strip, and the first page of the national gallery of the country in question.

I can't really blame anybody for any of this... it's just the way things work. In an ideal world, the daily/monthly most popular photos should be the best/most interesting/rarest/most involved uploads of the day/month, but it rarely is. Instead it's mostly a combination of photos uploaded at the most "lucky times" (not immediatly pushed out of the spotlight and whatever photos were upload by the people with the most followers.

I don't completely agree with the first part here, but the rest is mostly true. The popularity of the user does not seem to matter here in the US gallery, the larger users seem to average the same amount of likes as the smaller ones. Photo quality does seem to play a large part though, the better the photo, the more likes.

But the 'last 10' concept is entirely true. I admittedly do it myself, to other users, I will take a look at their page, where they're from, and their last 10 posts.

And unfortunately for those (myself included) who upload more than 10 photos in a certain period of time, only the last 10 posted will receive attention, its just the way things are, oh well

Another disaster: 1978 Toyota Cressida I Coupé, one of only 5 on the entire site: 3 hearts, unable to even make it into the daily top 14. http://platesmania.com/dk/nomer20118377

I will not mention any specific names, but only say that many of the cars that push the Cressida out of the top 14 are modern everyday cars.

The reason not to mention names is, that I have nothing against these photos getting hearts, it's the overall BALANCE that's completely off. Something is clearly wrong when a high-res, carefully edited and optimized close-up a very rare japanese classic car fails to compete with a snapshot of the rear end of a modern everyday car.
