The bonfire is always burnt on Easter Saturday and earlier people believed that it was the day Jesus was dead so the protection of God was weak so they burnt the bonfire to banish the witches and other bad spirits away. Nowadays it's only a tradition and people don't believe like that anymore.

They're doing the same thing in Zürich (Sechseläuten), but always the 3rd Monday of April! The faster the snowman figure explodes, the warmer Summer will be!
