Yes, it's a beautiful car and it was selling well back in the day, until the main market, USA, tightened their safety regulations back in 1973, forcing Saab to fit huge rubber bumpers, completely ruining the sleek appearance, as well as the aerodynamics, which of course led to gas consumption going up...
Needless to say (since this was in the middle of the 1973/74 global oil crisis), this was very unfortunate for the sales figures, and shortly after, SAAB decided it was not worth it and ended production.
A danish car I've sometimes caught, alternates between having the huge rubber bumper and no bumper at all, so that owner clearly doesn't have the thin version seen here.
At the CRAA Classic Race in Aarhus (DK) there are always a handful Sonetts, both the MkIII as this one, but also the MkII (early 2-stroke version as well as the later V4)
Watching a 2-stroke Sonett drive by is quite an experience. The car looks like a fancy sports car, but sounds like a Trabi
