Also rare that it wasn't bought to go to Africa

Yes, indeed :( I know the last owner, and I told him when I heard it was scrapped; he should have called me first...

There's a very heavy responsibility on the owners of nearly extinct car models. This one was once extremely common (it was even popular as a taxi in Denmark, something modern Peugeots certainly can't claim to be), but it's also a model that rarely got the attention of collectors and restorers and because of that, there's nearly none left now.

What I mean by my first sentence is, that if you own a car that's becoming a very rare sight, you need to be aware of that. You need to understand, that what you have may be one of the last survivors, and for that reason, you shouldn't just scrap it because it's rusty, the engine is worn, the seats are ugly, you're getting too old to drive, or you feel it's not worth the effort to try to sell it because "it's probaly worth nothing in that condition"

Owners of such cars owe it to their heritage, to do their very best to ensure that they get preserved, maybe contact their national car owners club for the make in question, in this case Peugeot, and even be willing to give away for free in order to save it.

I totally agree with you, Tasty, and I've said it many times when speaking abou Japanese cars (which is my favourite type of cars) ... In the seventies and eighties nearly no-one had interst, or thought of them as collectors items. Today they are very popular in many cases.

Speaking about this Peugeot 504, I have done some background check. I'm not sure if I should, because it almost ruined my night sleep.

It had a mileage of 70799 km on July 27, 2012. This could be wrong, as the car only counts 5 digits, as far as I've found. But according to the annual check it seems right due to the other dates of mileage registrating.

Beside this it had four owner through its 40 years. The last owner was a local music artist who I know personally. He had bought it (or got it) from his music comrade back in 2004. This comrade again had it from his father in 2001.

When I took these photos I lived ca 1800 km away from Tromsø, and buying the car was not a theme. But I could never dream of that it would end up in a wreck yard... :(

I've been in contact with the last owner, and he was glad to see the photos of the car. When I asked him what was wrong with it when he scrapped it, he wrote:

"The car went like clockwork. Some rust on the left side in the welding joint at the rear wheel, and the paint was dull. If I had a garage with the necessary tools, it would have been like new."

My night sleep was not even better because of this answer..

:bad: My brother had a black 1987 BMW 735i (E32) a few years ago - huge car, but very fast and super luxurious. He did a lot of maintenance himself and kept it flawlessly clean at all times.

In the end, he sold it and got a Jaguar XJR instead(!) - he said that although it looked almost mint, it had become a real pain to keep running. Due to age (probably), the electronics had started to fail constantly, one element after another and replacements cost a forune, even if he installed them himself. Furthermore, the windshield seals were starting to leak and he had to do small rust repairs almost every month, so it had become a real pain to take care of, and very costly as well.

The car was used as a trade in at the Jag dealer and has not been registered again, so probably scrapped, which would be a real shame, in my opinion, and that car was pretty rare.

It was also known to have been the ex-limo of a rather famous danish millionaire back in the 1980s-1990s. So my point is, even if you have a rare car with a prominent history, extremely well taken care of and maintained... there's still a risk that it gets scrapped, especially if used as trade in.
