Interesting! I just noticed though that this BMW was registered in the DVLA in 2012. Possibly it's from Ireland or Isle of Man/Jersey/Guernsey. Considering this plate was issued in 2012 would it still have been issued on Shetland Islands and not just Aberdeen for example?

Well, Aberdeen began registering vehicles on Shetland's behalf way back in 1980, so either way this reg would never have been issued in the Lerwick VRO (Vehicle Registration Office) – as that had been closed for 20+ years!
Y-RPS was a 100% contemporary registration series, but owing to the limited amount of vehicles which were registered on the Shetland Islands, it wasn't uncommon for unused numbers to be issued post-facto for re-reg purposes – as appears to have been the case here.
