How can newer cars register with the old 1983 black series plates? Is it legal? I've seen a 720s and a 812 Superfast with the same format.

But black plates are forbidden on any car registered before 1980 so no it is not legal but many people do it because they prefer how it looks - if they get stopped they pay the fine...
