Not "grey" market, that refers to when you could legally import vehicles that were simultaneously sold in both the home market as well as elsewhere (such as lots of grey market 80s Mercedes models). This is just illegal

I always assumed these "illegal" cars were imported under the show car category or whatever it is. I wonder what the logistics of illegally importing a car entail. The plate must still be valid right?

Show and display is a specific list that the US government has, otherwise, these illegally imported vehicles typically have legal state titles, however, on a federal level, they are illegal and can be seized and crushed at any time (however this is rare). https://www.nhtsa.gov/document/vehicles-determined-eligible-importation-show-or-display-0

Interesting, so it just comes down to DMV workers not necessarily knowing the federal regulations?

Honestly, I am not totally sure how it gets passed the DMV

Great question haha, sometimes people insure these as Nissan 240s, assuming you can find a vin that is clear, it's all shady and I don't fully know how it works

That makes sense, doesn't seem worth the risk of getting your car crushed. S15s aren't cheap
