This is one of the license plates that got auctioned for 45 million VND (or approx 1856 USD) on October 24th this year. I would say the owner got lucky since they got this plate for a cheap price. Although it's weird that this plate was issued in the old font, not the new one.

What makes this plate worh that price?

In case you didn't know, in August this year the government started to collect lucky license plates like: 888.88, 456.78, 911.11,... and auction them with starting bid of 40 million VND (or approx 1650 USD$) online. This has proven to be successful and the government has been getting a lot of money from this, like the most expensive license plate ever sold is the 51K-888.88 license plate of Ho Chi Minh City for 15.2 billion VND (or approx 626.800 USD$). In Vietnam, plates like 888.88, 911.11 or 456.78 is believed to bring people luck in business, life,... so that's why it costs so much.

This is actually one of the lowest price you could get since 1650 USD$ is the starting bid. I would say the owner got lucky, many plates were sold for 50.000 USD$-300.000 USD$. And like I just mentioned, someone even spent 626.000 USD$ for the 51K-888.88 plate, and that's not even the original price (The original price is 32 billion VND or approx 1.3 million USD$, the first owner canceled the bid so it went auction for the 2nd time and got sold).

You're right, Vietnamese people are willingly to spend an enormous amount of money just to get a special license plate. Before license plates auctioning was a thing, you gotta buy the car with the license plate too and the price would be doubled or tripled of the vehicle's value depends on the plate. For example, in January 2022 a brand new Mercedes GLC (worth 2.2 billion VND or 90.000 USD$) got the 61A-888.88 plate and it was later sold for 291.658 USD$.
