Interesting to see that Switzerland still has got conscription. Many European countries have abolished the conscription in the last 20 years, even though The Netherlands didn't do that completely. (There's still conscription for all the men above 17, but the compulsory attendance was abolished in 1996 which means that the Dutch army is now actually an all-volunteer force.)

We're attached to tradition =) There was a vote last year to abolish the conscription, but it has been largely refused (73% ). Personally, I don't really want to do it, but I take it as a "life experience", a small parenthesis during my studies. It will make me discover Switzerland, especially the German-speaking part!

What a stupid thing it was abolished ! Conscription was a very good thing to educate the youth into patriotism.

Even when I do agree (partly) with you, I do get it that the compulsory attendance was abolished. It costs much money and in my country there hasn't been any war since 1945. However,on September 1st of this year there were plans to 'recreate' the conscription for both men and women in The Netherlands, but the plans will probably fail because there isn't any money available to make this happen.

The government should not force views upon people, but rather allow people to decide for themselves what they think. Just my 2 cents.
