Well, I didn't expect that somebody would have the exact same picture (but better!)

The car was built in 1974 and deregistered since 2018 (my photo is from March 27, 2018).

Cool spot! My photo is from August 2018, my first trip to Split. I visited the city for a second time a month ago. :)
I guess that rock also prevented you from spotting the front plate? :D Too bad we won't see it again. What can "deregistered" mean? Currently without plates, exported, moved to another district, or any of these? Hopefully not scrapped.

Actually, I remember I just passed by and didn't look for the front. The car was probably stuck there for quite some time.

Any of those except the last one. You can check when the vehicle last passed an MOT test in Croatia if it was after September 2015. In this case, the last date was 6.12.2017., so wherever the car is, it has not legally been on Croatian plates since (at the latest) December 2018.

Interesting, if I understand you correctly, in other countries (at least Hungary and Sweden) expired MOT won't make a plate invalid/deregistered, just the car won't be road legal.

In Croatia, you have to turn in the plates to a local MOT station if the car's license stopped being valid more than 15 days before. The station can keep the plates for up to 90 days. After that, they are usually destroyed.
