Volkswagen Touran

2nd gen (5T1), 2015–

License plate of Ireland, Regular plates

Two weekends ago, I was approached by the owner of this Irish Touran at the services, who tried to get fuel money from me, using the same story/tactics (saying he's late for a ferry, got kids in the car etc.) that these Irish fuel scammers use at service areas. He even showed me his Irish driving licence, fuel/bank cards etc., and told me he was from Kilkenny. Despite all this, I didn't give into his demands. I couldn't get a photo of the car from that initial interaction, but I was not surprised to spot him a week later, doing the same thing at the same service area! I just hope that not too many people haven't fallen for his scam.

Spotted at Leeds Skelton Lake Services, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

non-standard plate

Gypsies?

Without a shadow of a doubt! He's obviously not catching a ferry if he's lurking around a motorway service area every Saturday afternoon. He did have kids in the car too, which makes me think how bored they must be to be spending their Saturday sat in a car with their dad trying to get money from strangers. I was surprised that the Touran didn't have a towbar though.

I wonder if its a permanent gypsy site nearby with static caravans and some Irish live there which might explain the absence of a towbar and why the car's been in the area for a while. There's like 10 permanent sites outside of a village near me and the whole area is plagued by antisocial behaviour and fly-tipping which kind of explains itself really.

He most likely lives at one of those sites for sure. I think Leeds has a lot of these sites, as does York too, generally places to avoid really. I bet there would be a lot of interesting plates/stuff to see there, but it's not worth the risk of getting very hostile attention. My father used to work as a security guard/patrol at the local Toyota/Citroen/BMW dealers back in the late 1990's, and there's a permanent traveller's site at the back of these dealerships, and he had to deal with the trouble that the residents caused constantly, and at one point was held at knifepoint by one of them (fortunately he wasn't hurt, but it's not something anyone wants to endure). The site is still there, and every time I drive passed, it's always got people in Transit tippers (no doubt stolen/uninsured/on fake plates) and pushbikes entering and exiting the site.
