It was a requirement for trucks and buses in USSR and ex-Soviet countries. I don't know exactly why, probably to keep the registration readable when the plate is dirty. In Vietnam they are (were?) putting it not only on the back, but also on the side of the buses and trucks (Soviet influence I guess).

Svesor (2022-10-09 18:39:48)I guess especially for winter. I saw a lot of trucks and buses where the plate was completely covered in snow but the big text was still very well readable.

Maybe we should copy this here in countries with long winters
