My first guess is US Forces based for 1 year in the UK and took the car back - bearing in mind the car was only 4 years old by then it was probably worth shipping home (I understand US Forces get free shipping to the UK but must pay if they wish to ship a car home).
My second guess would be an American executive working here for a project although less common for them to bring a car over...
Still cool to see the plate is still on the car since 2002!

It also might have an SC plate on the back, but the british plate was real! I've been seeing it for years and never managed to get a pic of it.

Thanks! Probably. The reason is that it was bought in the US, and then they took it to the UK, then brought it back with them, and re-registered it here!
