It looks "ok" here because the lighting is such that the fender flares look like wheel gap, it looks bad in any color but gray, and I hope they decide to offer a color matched cladding option

I've actually learned that the cladding is like that to protect the paint on the car. After all, this is a rally car, so people shouldn't be afraid to offroad in it. I kind of think they wanted to go for a more offroad-ish (Crosstrek-type) look.
I get where Subaru was coming from, but that doesn't change the fact that I think it looks awful, and I didn't even think the VA generation looked great when it came out, but now that this is out, the VA looks awesome haha

I guess they were looking for functionality over looks with the VB generation. I've always loved the VA, so it remains the better WRX for me, and most likely always will.

Certainly there is already an aftermarket paint-matched cladding option to replace the plastic trim!
naterez71 Yup, there is. https://www.aeroflowdynamics.com/products/2022-subaru-wrx-paint-matched-fender-flares
To be honest, those make the car look way better. It'll still take some getting used to for me, but I'll get used to seeing these odd WRXs around eventually.
