Oldtimers plates used to have a black background until the Mercosul format came along and changed it to the gray letter on white background; due to community pressure, the Brazilian government now recognizes the black background for Mercosul-Oldtimer plates, even tough they aren\'t allowed outside the country and aren\'t the standard issue plate.
