Up until last week this was the lowest plate from ZH. Since last friday ZH 24 is the new lowest and also the new most expensive plate in Switzerland, sold for 299'000 CHF or 333'350 USD! It was auctioned for the UEFA 2024 Euro.

ZH 50 was auctioned to celebrate 50 years of the local DOT at Zurich Albisgüetli and was sold for 202'000 CHF or 225'206 USD back in fall 2023.

Interesting, so Zürich saves plates to auction them for special events? Did nobody in Zürich keep the low plate through generations?

Since the 1932/33 series, low license plate numbers were reserved for professional garages and mechanics. In the 1980s, the "U" series was introduced, creating a separate category. At that time, the owner of ZH 50 received the plate ZH 50 U instead, and the original ZH 50 was taken out of service and kept until 2023. We know that ZH 50 U remained in use at a garage until 1993.

In Zurich, up until 2018, the lowest private plate number was ZH 1000. After that, the canton began auctioning off one 3-digit plate per week, starting from ZH 987 and decreasing from there. However, they only sell private plates that are not already assigned as U plates.

In other cantons, the situation differs. Many very low numbers—like OW 1 or SZ 1—have been passed down through generations.
