I had no idea! Were they sold in China or imported from other countries only?

In China in the 1980s and 1990s, you could purchase imported cars at supply points in various provinces. Imported cars from Eastern Europe were the cheapest, which can also explain why there were so many cars produced in Eastern Europe on the roads of China in the last century.By the way, at that time, if you had enough various production materials (such as steel, fuel, chemical raw materials), you could directly contact the staff at the material supply point and exchange your various products for an imported car.

During the communist era, there was a separate currency of sorts, called "bony" or "Tuzex checks", which was a special type of currency one could only obtain by working abroad for the government, or illegally by buying it at an extremely high exchange rate from a shady dealer.

For this currency, one could buy various items that weren't readily available, such as foreign products (even western, such as jeans!) or high demand local products. I believe my grandpa bought his 1968 Škoda 1000MB this way without having to wait years for it. He drove it until 2000-ish and although he died in 2016, the car is still in the family and is currently being renovated.
