Hi! Do you still know where in Kaiserslautern this was?
Was this in the Ramstein US Base or somewhere in KL City

Hi, yes I do remember where this was, but for security reasons I do not feel that I can say anything about the precise location. I visited all bases in KL and surrounding areas and all my spots were described as the same so that it should be impossible to know the location - the only photos I wrote that were in the base were from the Cars & Coffee meet on Sunday morning! Therefore if I say nothing about the location it could be anywhere !;)

Yes, that's understandable. Too bad, but as a normal German, you just don't have the opportunity to get to the base

Yes of course it's not possible to just visit unfortunately, as a British citizen I had to use my passport to enter as they do not recognise a British Drivers Licence - even though other EU states drivers licence is accepted (I was still allowed to be an EU citizen when I visited the bases)

So you were allowed to enter, when you showed your British passport or am I wrong?

I was with an American, and I was not allowed to be alone on base, he had to be with me at all times (within reason, in the shopping mall I wandered freely). I was signed in under his name so I was his responsibility. At one of the bases I had to give my fingerprints with the same system they use at US Immigration entering America by plane!

What's the legality of taking pictures there? I have seen many interesting vehicles and plates during my trips to various Norwegian military instalments, both local and foreign, but I have not taken any pictures because each base has their own rules, some are very strict about photography and others have more or less no restrictions besides the obvious.

This is an interesting question, and there was no specific answer we could find. The general understanding seemed to be that if there were no military vehicles or buildings visible in the photo it would be acceptable to take a photo. For example on one of the bases is a NATO Headquarters which I could not take photos around, which was a shame as it was the only place I got to see Canadian Military plates and didn't get any photos :( So I limited my photos to just the car parks and residential street zones (and blurred any names or numbers), and no one seemed to be concerned. Because the bases are also residential they seem to be accepting of casual photos especially of cars (as there was a small car show gathering for US Personnel on the Sunday morning). I did not point my camera at any of the aircraft, runways, official buildings, US Military Police vehicles (which I really wanted to get a photo of!) or checkpoints. Several officers and security personnel saw my camera and not one questioned it.
I also drove my previous UK registered car around the base as well being a passenger in my friend's locally registered car - and everyone just seemed amazed to see a "JDM" Subaru because it was RHD, even though it's a Type-UK :D The owner of the red US-Spec STI was really interested in it!

So If you have an American Passport you can go to the bases, even if you’re not a soldier? Cuz my neighbor I think has an American passport. So Is it possible to get into the bases with her, having an American passport?

No the person must be stationed at the base as active military (or family living with a military person). My friend has now returned to the US so I have no contact any more, so it is unlikely I will get to return
