I just got a warning luckily! The two officers were super suspicious of me taking pics of random cars. I acted super dumb and told
them I collected plates, and hence was looking for US plates in the surroundings =)

Luxembourg is also the only place in Europe where I was ever approached by police for taking pics of license plates :D

I think Germany is even worse.
In September i went to Stuttgart-Vaihingen to spot Us-Spec Cars at the US Base, it was closer to the gate than i thought :(
I took 200+ Pics of Cars driving by. 90% of the drivers didn't care, but one driver in a white Tiguan stopped in the middle of the road and was really mad. in the next 15 minutes he drove by a few times and i was caught by the security of the Us Base. Luckily also just a warning. but that was not cool haha :-X

Well, spotting next to the US base is probably not the best idea one can have. :D but yeah, I have made some experiences as well, but none involved the police.

I definitely know better now. In the future, I will be more careful about car spotting near US bases and not obviously standing around on the street. I was 14 at the time and didn't start until August. You learn from mistakes! And in October I was in Ansbach-Katterbach near the Us Base and everything worked

That's why I prefer to only take photos of regular cars/plates by the motorway. Encounters with "ordinary people" can be as scary as getting into trouble with the police... potentially even worse, since you risk somebody pulling a knife or gon on you.

By a motorway, you'll be safe, because even the most angry types are unlikely to slam the brakes on the motorway in order to get to you, and it's easy to get away, so no matter how angry they are, they know they just need to let it go.

Buses, trucks, exotic cars and even vans are less risky since there's a better understanding in the general public, that photographers may want to take photos, so drivers are less likely to accuse you of taking photos of THEM (rather than their cars)

Something similar happened to me and our colleague Jore when some years ago we went for a US-spec spotting to Rota (American Naval station). We were as best discrete as we could, but still, somebody, who was walking around saw us with cameras making shots of cars on the road (really close to the entrance gate of the base). It seems that this person called the military police from the base, so 3 navy police cars came to see what's going on and also a regular police car. After checking that we weren't terrorists they went away and they explained to us that Americans are afraid about their integrity and that we should take more care with the photos.

I totally understand that, But I love US-Spec Cars and I’m not very interested in normal vehicles so there’s not really an opportunity for me to spot on a local highway.

@astonkas But Yea that’s quite difficult with US-Spec spotting near a US Base (Gate)
To be honest I’d take the risk
PS: Love Your and Jore‘s Photos in Rota
