The Astra has a different plate than the bike rack. Is this legal? I don't think so right...

Possibly bike rack plate? I know some countries issue them but I don't think Germany is one them. Only other reason I can think of is they have two cars and accidently left the wrong one and haven't noticed.

Many people don't really care to change the plate on their rack when they get a new car. It's not legal though.

Yeah I thought so too! In which country do they have bike rack plates? Never heard of that before.

That's a good possibility, I never see it in the Netherlands tho, maybe the police is more strict on it than in Germany.

In some countries reapeater plates used on bike racks have a different design or color scheme as regular plates. Naturally these plates are not really issued to the bike rack but are just an addition because the original plate on the vehicle is covered.

For example:

Denmark
Austria
Czech Republic
And in the Netherlands you do it too

In Germany the owner can just use an additional regular plate without the official registration seals. But there are cases where people get really creative with this plates.

Bulgaria also issue repeater plates too, in the similar style to Denmark (red characters). Here's another example
