The pilot movie was aired in 1996. Since then over 260 episodes have been broadcasted. Thus you can definitely call it popular.
The stuntwork in the series is often really impressive. The storylines on the other hand are mostly forgettable.

In Spain it's on the TV every morning for 3 hours, I see it sometimes

I also see it sometimes on French TV channels, the stunts are really impressive! It's probably the only German-speaking series that had success in France (with Rex, too)
