From wikipedia " Volkswagen ordered 2000 vehicles and the production started in June 1949.... ...By the end of the 1940s, the company's economic situation was not good. It also suffered from a massive fire in its paint shop on 23 July 1949, and was destroyed, although it was rapidly rebuilt. The company met its end in bankruptcy in 1952"
