After 1948 it was decided that the province of Aosta would be kept in Italian territory instead of going to France. The newly formed province of Valle d'Aosta was declared an autonomous region and a part of the "specialness" were these beautiful plates with the regional coat of arms instead of the Italian republic seal. This symbol has been present in Valdostan plates even after the change of format in 1994 and can still be found in modern AO stickers.
