The 300 series is still issued today, 30A is for vanity plates only.
I thought the 300 series was over and they started making 30A, thanks.

300-309 is for standard plates, the rest is for chosen numbers. Common numbers like 33-33, 77-77, 88-88, etc. ran out of class codes so they introduced letters for them.

Also to answer this question, the letter should count up first. Only 10 letters are possible though. It goes like this: A, C, F, H, K, L, M, P, X, Y
