Is it allowed to drive around Canada/the US with an EU licence plate? Or do you need extra permits or something?

I've seen dozens of cars with european (and elsewhere) plates here in Canada, and a few in the US. To my knowledge you don't require any additional permitting, you would just need valid registration in the base country and proper insurance for a trip like that.
