Especially since it was in good enough condition to pass inspection in 2018, meaning it can't have been a that lost cause unless it was crashed into.

Crash is a possible reason, but also that it's nearly impossible to get spare parts for these cars, even used parts. The reason is not clear unless contacting last owner, but from own experience I know that a 30-40 year old Japanese car is hard to own if necessary parts is missing. It can even be a challenge to sell it, and if the parking space at your house is limited, unfortunately there is always a room for it at the scrapyard. Sad, but true..  :(
