Don't think so. Different manufacturers and these two could be rather called competitors in USSR. ZAZ Tavria was budget model, whereas Lada 2108/2109 was more expensive and the whole VAZ plant had more money.
Officially Lada 2108 was first front-wheel drive car produced in USSR, but in fact it was ZAZ Tavria
