I'm assuming most of these cars are only in Romania for a few weeks then return to the UK forever

Not necessarily, not all cars are used in the UK, over time I saw also many RHDs registered in Romania used only here.

P.S since 01.01.2021 Romania banned registration of cars imported from the UK due to Brexit, except other RHD countries from EU.

I'm aware that RHD cars exist outside the UK, afterall I own one. I mostly say it about these ones because of the way the plate is attached. Seems like a quick run back, see the family and come back with the car registered job.

I fail to see how Romania can ban the importation of vehicles from a country that the EU has a trade deal with. You can still import vehicles from the UK, just have to pay the VAT on them.

Also another reason for why RHDs was banned to registration in Romania is and the big number of road accidents in RO, annually many drivers who drive RHDs in Romania had serious road accidents.
But this measure for me is useless, anyway who is a bad driver will be injured or die in a road accident no matter if his car is RHD or LHD, personally I don't think number of road accidents will decrease în Romania in the next years.

Recently I heard that you can still imported cars from the UK in Romania, only if these are LHDs or will be converted to LHD.

Can you share a statistic about these accidents? I would love to know what percent of vehicles in Romania are RHD and what percent of all accidents are caused by RHD vehicles. I agree on your opinion that the driver is the important part, though I also think there should be some additional requirements for RHD cars, such as mandatory overtaking mirrors.

A ban on RHD cars only from the UK sounds ridiculous. What stops me from getting a friend in another EU country to register me a RHD car from the UK, then bring it to Romania where they will have to accept it? Such a ban is useless and doesn't solve the problem. As I mentioned, RHD cars should be required to have the additional overtaking mirror (it solves basically all of the visibility issues). Additionally, I do not trust LHD conversions. Reworking the entire steering and electrical system of a car is not easy work, and doing it in some cheap Eastern European garage just increases the risks of a future mechanical failure leading to a big accident. I'd much rather drive an original RHD car than a converted LHD car.

I remember few years ago there was a legislative proposal in Romania about mandatory installation of the overtaking mirror for RHD cars.

According to RAR (Romanian Automotive Register) after Brexit transition period is ended, RAR will no longer issue vehicle registration certificate for RHD cars.
I found out in Romania are over 110,000 RHD cars, more than 15,000 such cars have been registered in 2020.
Also about road accidents last statistics showed that 24 of 25 road accidents in Romania, in the first half of 2020, in which RHD cars were involved, drivers with RHDs were guilty.
Obviously that LHD conversion is useless, is not only unsafe but is very expensive as well, many people will not do this from these reasons.
(Even if I saw few cars with such modifications)

Another problem is also at persons which never lived in the UK or Ireland but they drives RHDs in Romania.
I referred to the beginners drivers especially.
Anyway is a nonsense, namely some beginners buy RHD cars from Romania, when actually they learned to drive LHD cars.

I've just been reading about this from some Romanian sites. It seems that their idea is that they won't give type approval for them, but the problem is that the majority of UK sold vehicles already have EU type approval so it's not for Romania to issue it.

In terms of accidents, I suspect the problem is the driver... Having driven a lot in Romania, the driving standard is probably the worst in the EU. Drivers keeping absolutely no distance, crazy speeds and bullying drivers to go faster, overtaking on blind corners, treating villages like they're race tracks.

The other issue is that not allowing registeration will not stop Romanians driving with UK plates, as in this case: https://www.promotor.ro/stiri-auto/bmw-cu-volan-pe-dreapta-camion-rapa-18809708

Exactly what I saying earlier, reckless driving is the big problem in Romania.
