At least it's unique and a deviation from what is expected to be a license plate font, but the dotted 0, that's a good red flag (possible confusion with 8 just like with the slashed zero like on NZ plates)...btw, I like playing with and designing fake license plate fonts in free time :D

You're absolutely right about that. The first time I saw it I thought it was one of those remade fake plates. They might as well have picked the "Comic Sans" typeface for their new plates.

They should have retained the 2006 design and the initial "A" would have been easy to recognize without a single problem, but was it really necessary to emphasize the new series even more with that font...

jaramat 2023-02-01 23:36:33 | #13

I kind of like it :sorry:

Anyway, how's this gonna work? Obviously, there's gonna be AA-AZ series at first, but then it's just gonna be AY, AZ, BF, BG, BI, BM, BO, BP, BU, BV...skipping the already existing region code plates. That's weird.

Thank you all :)

The font is unique and it's made by people from University of fine arts and they said that license plate readers had problems with the old font, so now the each symbol has unique shape. The font looks weird, but it's still better than take FE-schrift and use it, like many other countries did.
Getting rid of regional coding is really bad, now it will take years to get rid of AA series but on the other side, vanity plates have all 7 symbols optional now :)

If someone gets bored of the AA's the guys in Slovakia should have made it possible to reissue a pre-2023 plate number under the new plates if they just want the plate to look new...

In my opinion though the font isn't that bad and it might be - as I said - a deviation (which is something I like seeing - custom fonts on license plates), but it looks more like a display font than something intended for license plates. However I think it's a bit small because the negative space around makes me imagine the plate as fanmade or as a fake illustration rather than something that's actually being issued. I might talk too much but I'm just voicing my opinion.

Another country getting rid of region codes

This is pretty devastating for plate spotters. We've gone from ~70 different region codes to find, and within that, finding each plate type within each region (trailer, electric, historic etc.). So hundreds of combinations to find, now reduced to what, fewer than 10? A very sad day.

Lore has it safety of drivers has to do with region code removal (TikTok: licenseplatetok already did a video on new Slovak plates and comments suggest vandalism on basis of region code might have to do with that but I'm not really sure. What was also common according to comments is cussing at and insulting drivers from other regions).

If they were to centralize the plate system already, removing one letter would have been a bit better (AA-000AA -> A-001AA); at least we have one letter less to get bored from :)

Unfortunately, this is the tendency in Europe.
Spain 2001, Lithuania 2003, France 2009, Moldova 2015, Slovakia 2023.
If I'm right, Czechia is also thinking about to have national system, the electric plates are already done...
In existing countries in 1992, only happened getting rid of codes. No one of those countries introduced regional codes.
Regional codes were introduced in two new countries: Montenegro and Kosovo.

Something's telling me they might just slap a different letter for Prague (possibly X) and continue with the system as usual ?()

Prague will continue with 1AA A001 but the information is unofficial and not 100% confirmed, so there is still a small chance that some surprise will happen

I like the 4 numbers so I hope they continue with something like 1R0 0001 or 1RA 0001 but I fear that might require changing the law so they'll probably take the easy way out and just go with something the 1AA A001. Or AA0 0001, which would be cool, too. Or, they could resurrect the old system and continue with ALD 00-01

In my opinion, coat of arms should be put in the middle, between letters and digits.
