The Hilux surf was probably one of the more common imports into the UK, along with other Japanese-spec 4x4's such as the Mitsubishi Pajero (later sold officially in the UK as the 'Shogun'). The Hilux Surf was never offcially sold in the UK. A majority of the Japanese 4x4's were imported to the UK as 'Grey Imports' in the late 1990's/early 2000's.

Cool! I've noticed a handful of these popping up here as well as Toyota SUV's and Pickup trucks are known for their longevity and reliability. The prices of older Tacomas and 4Runners even with high mileage are quite expensive, so it doesn't surprise me that people are importing them.

That's an interesting observation, I did wonder if you got the 4Runner in Canada, but it makes sense to import those lower-mileage and better condition Japanese-spec examples, even with the whole RHD thing. I also wonder if these Hilux Surf models were common in Japan too, especially considering to the size of these vehicles too.

I can't imagine they are were too common, they seem very Un-Japanesey. Glad to see them popping up as imports all around the world!
