How are the three serial letters being assigned? Are they totally random?

I believe they are completely random, as long as they don't include an I or a Q, have 3 identical letters like GGG for example, or include a word such as MAN or CUT, unless it is a personalised plate that has a word or 3 identical letters. Hope this helps :thumbs up:

I've noticed a trend of basically all modern plates (from 2020 on) being unpleasant to read or remember. I'm convinced they're prioritising 'harsh', angular letters like Z, X or F over nicer more pleasant letters like S, U or C..

Maybe it's just me..

They're random but 'serial' to a dealer if you know what I mean?

Could you please explain it in more details? Does the dealer receive some kind of "combination pool"?

For example, my family owns a Mazda CX-5 that was bought new from a dealer with the reg ending in BT**OUU. At that same dealer, there were other CX-5s where the last U was replaced by other sequential letters of the alphabet, specific to that dealer. This tends to only apply to brand-new cars directly from the official car dealer and not second-hand cars. In fact, we were actually given a choice as to which number plate we wanted as they had identical specced cars so decided to give us a choice to which number plate we went for :D . I hope that makes sense?

Wow, such an interesting story! I suppose they didn't have OUR or OUT combinations, readable as words?

They do! Sometimes they pull them out of the pool and keep them as potential personalised numberplates
