It will be interesting to see how many diesels are left in 5 years!

Yes indeed. There are still a hell of a lot out there though, they were immensely popular for quite a large period of time (this is generally, not just Subaru). Like our household for example, its two diesels and one petrol. Both my neighbours have diesels too. And when I'm walking out and about I still notice a lot of cars are diesels.

For a lot of people it is still a definite choice when they are looking at buying cars. My dad has had diesels since 2012 as his personal car and since 2006 as our family car (Mk6 Golf GT TDI) as he often travels quite far for work trips a once or twice a month and it is much more suited for him to have a diesel. And for myself, my Rio 1.4 CRDi which I do about 12,000 miles a year in gets great MPG and is brilliant on fuel and is also £0 to tax (£20 from next time); I average about 50-55mpg around town and up to about 72mpg on a run, its brilliant.

This is an interesting perspective because my family only owns petrol cars. The last diesel car my Dad owned was a 90s Defender when I was still a baby.

Ahh right. I know quite a few people who still have diesel cars, a few of my mates had diesel as their first cars which they still have and one of my other mates is looking for a diesel as her first car as her job requires a 20 odd mile motorway journey as a commute where diesel will suit much better than a petrol. Her mum also has a diesel as they tow with it. Going back to my neighbour that I mentioned prior; he has a 2016 Skoda Octavia Scout TDI 4x4 manual which he bought new and it now has about 120,000 miles on it but he is really struggling to decide what he wants as a replacement as Skoda no longer makes the Octavia Scout which is the perfect car for his needs and he doesn't really want to have to step up to an SUV like the Karoq. He'd still want a diesel 4wd manual though which are becoming harder to come by in new cars.
