Yes, when I owned the car in America for my 3 month road trip, it had the plates 5LBP023 (Photo here).
When the car came to the UK, I wanted a 6-digit number so I could fit everything on just one line using motorcycle font on American size plate (legal for American and Japanese imported cars that do not have a European counterpart).
I searched for the cheapest interesting plate ("M22 TNG", GT04 MUS"...), but everything was very expensive or already registered. So I decided to search for a variation on the original plate, so 5LBP023 becomes T23 LBP. If I registered the car normally, it would be "AA04 AAA". This plate was in the "bargain section" because it does not say anything interesting.
So really the plate only has meaning to me, and most people just comment that the plate is too old for the car...
