Not necessarily benefits, but good cause and intention. The standard Veteran plate like this one, and any of this style with a flag or decal or war costs slightly more to register, but the extra cost is donated to Chelsea and Holyoke Soldiers Homes, which are homes for Veterans providing care.
All other military and veteran plates like Bronze Star, Gold Star, Purple Heart, Congressional Medal Of Honor, and others are all completely free of charge from the state.
Personally, I think that all military and veteran plates should be free of cost for the owner, but the state disagrees
