Toyota SportsVan

1st gen (Ipsum-based) (XM10; DK-market), 1996–2001

License plate of Denmark, Lower-taxed commercial vehicles

1998 Toyota Picnic 2.2 TD Van man. (XM10)

Retired in 2014

This Toyota model, also known as Toyota Ipsum and Toyota SportsVan was incredibly popular in Denmark, and although it was only available for a few years (1996-2001), it seemed to be everywhere, even many years later.

Now, in early 2019, it's one of the car types on the brink of extinction, although they're not too rare yet.

The 2nd generation Picnic, sold on export markets as Toyota Avensis Verso never reached the same popularity in Denmark and so, Toyota lost many customers, who simply moved on to competing car makes.

I have always liked these cars. I pass by one every day. They are still common in Norway, but their numbers are rapidly declining.
The automatic model also had a column shifter which is rare for Japanese cars in Europe. (only other ones in my mind with one is the Previa and Hiace)

Yes, they do tend to last longer than most. And when retired in Denmark they seem to be very sought after by export markets. Even very old Toyotas export like hot cakes, in particular Hiace and Hilux.

Speaking of Hiace, that's another model where Toyota have failed to hold on to customers. The European Hiace, (sold as Granvia in Japan) was hugely popular and the #1 selliing van in several european countries. The successor, Toyota Proace, isn't nearly as popular and customers have deserted for other car makes, like Ford Transit, Renault Master and Renault Trafic.
