SAAB Sonett
1967 Saab Sonett II 2-stroke (Saab 97)

Saab's Sonett model range was always quite peculiar. Made to look sporty, but with technical specs that didn't quite deliver an equally sporty feel. The second generation (following the completely failed Sonett I aka Saab 94) was originally equipped with a 841 cc, 3 cylinder, 60 bhp, 2-stroke engine. Saab decided to boost the specs, so arranged with Ford to use their V4 1500 cc engine (from Ford Taunus), starting from chassis number 259.
The Sonett seen here is chassis number 54, so a 2-stroke engine... in case anybody can't already tell from the exhaust! This photo shows the car as it was leaving the show at the end of the event. Despite being surrounded by lots of fancier cars, the crowds really turned their heads as the little Saab went by, sounding like a Trabant with huge plumes of exhaust smoke.
A regular visitor to the CRAA shows, I've taken several photos through the years, including a close-up of the peculiar engine, which I will post in the comments section asap.
